Today we shall ponder cycles, and open a 'Pandora's Box' of discipline, deadlines, duality, and disappointment.
Much can be said on the topic of cycles. They can be simple and concrete such as the phases of the moon, or complex and abstract like addictive behaviors. The world is filled with cycles, even down to the electron particle rotating around its nucleus. Being aware of the cycles is the first step to using them in your favor.
It Takes Three Kinds
I'm no expert on cycles - I've had trouble finding someone that is, to be fair. However, I've isolated three kinds of cycles you can identify in your life right now. Regardless of location, background, religion or other factors, the examples should be plentiful.
The first type is natural, and it's possibly the first cyclic group humans were ever able to perceive. Examples of natural cycles are:
Natural cycles are mostly unchangeable, creating the heart beat of the Universe. They form the basis of our clocks and calendars, and have provided much understanding about life in general. One could say these are "God's cycles," as they hum along despite our influence in the world.
The second type is helpful, which are created either through conscious effort or instinct. Some examples would be:
These are cycles that improve your life, or help you cope with difficulties. Helpful cycles can be concrete or abstract, and are valued as signs of a responsibly balanced lifestyle. While some of this kind may seem negative, such as the stages of grief, the end result is ultimately positive.
The third type is damaging, and they are often similar to helpful cycles. The main difference is that this kind harms more than it helps, and create hard to break patterns. A few examples include:
These cycles drain energy and resources, often at the cost of physical and/or mental health. Though some seem concrete, they typically involve cyclic thought patterns and are fundamentally abstract. In some cases, like the savior complex, these cycles may seem positive on the surface. Nevertheless, over time they reveal a negative impact overall.
Meditate On This
As you find stillness, notice the cyclic nature of your own thoughts as they appear. There will be chaos, sure, but many thoughts will reveal underlying patterns you may not be aware of. Contemplate the habits and routines you know of, and be vigilant for those you have taken for granted.
You may have an immediate desire to avoid damaging cycles as you discover them in your life. Take note of the aversion, but don't act on your desire just yet. For now, simply notice them. Get to really know your patterns, for better or worse, before deciding how to go about changing them. Many habits can be changed by awareness itself. Spend your effort on studying yourself until it becomes apparent there is a blockage awareness alone cannot unravel.
Pay special attention to how the natural cycles affect your life. The warmth and light of day versus the chill darkness of night will evoke different feelings and sensations within you. If you have plants, study the consistently calculated growth of leaves up its stalk, or the clever overlay of petals. Appreciation for "God's cycles" can uncover a wealth of understanding about our amazing world.
