Beginnings are often thought of like the starting lineup of a race. But they're more like the dark sky of a new moon, aren't they?

Today begins a new chapter for Metaphysiology. The site is redesigned for the umpteenth time, and I'm pumped for this new direction! A great way to begin something, whether it's the day, a new week or the start of a new project, is to sit in meditation to allow the mind and soul to calmly reconnect with the present moment. Otherwise, you might end up dragging the past into the future unknowingly.
Today is a new beginning of many sorts, so it seemed prudent to begin with beginnings.
What Is The Beginning?
When I search for "beginnings," there seems to be a common theme in the results. It's almost as if to start something is to draw a hard line separating it from anything before. A definitive zero point to measure from, so to speak. Is that really how beginnings work?
Going off to college feels like a beginning, doesn't it? So does a new relationship just starting out. However, they're not absolute beginnings at all; the first day of college is simply a new level of education, and there can only be one 'first' in love (though they're rarely the last!).
I begin things almost daily, and from a certain perspective it always feels like a brand new experience. The best experiences I've had started out with the understanding that whatever "new" journey lay before me, it was built on a past of similar ones.
Much like the new moon. A new beginning in a cycle that is continuously moving forward.
Everything comes from something. New life is born from the experiences, resources, and energies of times past. Though we might find apparent starting points for that hard line, it is drawn in the sand of infinity.
From one side, it is easy to contemplate the lack of beginnings at all. The Universe is simply one continuous shifting and reacting cluster of quantum dust. Many religions support this view with the idea of reincarnation, as the soul evolves from one lifetime to the next. So, too, are all new beginnings simply a continuation of the past in an evolved direction.
From another perspective, beginnings are happening constantly. Each new moment is another beginning, and another place you can start from. Every slice of 'now' is new and fresh, waiting for you to seize it and be completely present in your being.
Take some time today to quietly reflect on the beginning of this moment in your own life, and what it would mean if that chance to start anew were right here and now. Cast off the burden of beginnings as a definitive, hard line and embrace the flow of cyclic energy within and around you at all times. As the line blurs and expands simultaneously, find peace in knowing this moment is always here for you.
Every moment is another opportunity to begin, and every moment past led you to this one. When you are ready to begin your day, your week, or that project you've been considering, take comfort in knowing the moment has been preparing every step of the way.
