The Magic Of Days5/15/19
Gratitude isn't the only way to believe "every day is magical." In truth, each moment has its own unique focus and potential anyone can tap into!
Traditional Spell Timing Depending on how dedicated you are to any given spell, the time it is best performed could be whittled down to an exact date and time using traditional methods. In the occult, each segment of labeled time has a specific meaning to help guide spellcasting for even the beginners - assuming the beginner can understand how to calculate all these elements. Witchipedia does a quick-but-thorough explanation of these elements, for those looking for the traditionally sound methods of timing. Or here's a different resource to help calculate planetary hours, if you're into that sort of thing. However, most people are too impatient for that system. Why? Because it could have you waiting months for the "right" time. Who wants to wait months to petition the Universe for a promotion? Let's not forget the Powers That Be need time even after the spell to respond to our request. Waiting months or years for the "right time" only makes sense if it could guarantee a sure thing. Without that guarantee, most of us prefer to get a quicker response to re-think our desires and strategies. (Amirite?) New Age Timing Spellcraft impatience has gotten so extreme, most people use the unreliable system of the days of the week to guide their timing. If you're wondering why I say unreliable, consider what decided there should be seven days to a week. The week is an arbitrary, man-made construct. It holds a very weak bond to time without other timing considerations to magically 'anchor' the interpretations. However, waiting a week or less is acceptable, and for bigger spells some drop the day altogether and simply focus on moon phases. But is that really enough? If it were that easy, why would the traditional methods be so complicated? |

A New Way Of Timing
Every method of timing has its benefits, though not all are necessary in every spell. Binding a fellow practitioner, for example, will likely require more forethought than binding a regular person (yes, some people practice magic without realizing what they're doing). Before settling on a simple or complex method, it is important to analyze the rest of the spell, to see where it may be lacking.
That's right- no spell is without its weak spots. How difficult is the task you're requesting of the Universe? How difficult were the ingredients to obtain? How skillful do you need to be for the rites, gestures, and other elements of performing the spell? If these don't balance out, then you may want to use timing to make up the difference.
There's also a power-vs-precision aspect to think about. Some timing elements are more effective in raising (or waning) energy, and other elements are designed to focus and guide energy. A full moon is fantastic at lending energy, but rubbish at focusing; so a full moon spell will require all the other elements to be on point. A new moon has virtually no energy at all, being essentially a void moon- making it a great time to focus on desire spells (love, jobs, and other new beginnings).
Timing Isn't Just Time
There are other cycles outside typical timing that could support your spellcraft as well. For more information about these elements of time, look for the newest Everyday Element book, Part 3: How To Have Perfect Timing.
